Phones

Phones are beginning to piss me off to the point where I'm considering replacing my iPhone with an iPod touch or iPad (contract expires in July, damn). Today, I picked up my phone to see 14 missed calls, all from the same caller (dude at work), and an email containing the following text:

PICK UP UR PHONE!!!

First off, I do have a "Missed Calls" feature, and I can see that you've called. Phoning me more then once won't make me come any faster. If what you have to say is so fucking important (it wasn't that important), you could have just emailed it to me. Morons.

.co.cc is a joke.

I've noticed several people on the MyBB Forums have started boards with ".co.cc" domains. Not having heard of the TLD before, I decided to look it up.

General impression: Fucking full of themselves. They think they're a fucking domain registrar, when all they're doing is offering a bloody subdomain. Example, want to move a "domain" to another account? Let's read their "transfer" policy:

1. Submit a domain transfer order for the domain you wish to transfer.
2. Pay transfer fee. Once we have received the fee, we will do a Whois lookup for your domain.
3. Send us your identitycard, drivers license or passport showing the same infomations that was entered on your CO.CC account. To send these, upload the file(a scan or legible digital photo) or via fax(82)31-919-6150.
4. CO.CC approves the transfer
5. Transfers can take anywhere from 5 - 15 days, depending on how fast each step can be completed

I've transferred so much shit between Name.com accounts, I could do it with my eyes closed. It's instant and free. What is this?

Let us use their "whois" feature. I did a "lookup" on google.co.cc for the hell of it.

Domain Name : google.co.cc
Registrar : CO.CC, INC.
Whois Server : co.cc
Referral URL : http://www.co.cc
Name Server : SERVER101.CO.CC

Updated Date : 06-Oct-2009
Creation Date : 06-Oct-2009
Expiration Date : 06-Oct-2014

Lol, registrar. This is just sad. Hilarious, though.

“SEO”

The term "SEO" is beginning to piss me off. A client's "SEO guy" recently suggested that my web developing skills are below par, because "I use <p> tags, which search engines don't highly rank. [....blah blah blah....] and it's best to put content in <h4> tags". Honestly? I asked him to source that, but I never did get a response. I suppose I just never knew that headings and paragraphs were the same thing.

Keywords for your searching convenience: SEO, web, PlayStation 3, condoms

How the internet should have been (Or why ICANN sucks)*

The internet has come a long way since the early 90s when it become the public network it is. Remember the days of Geocities, AOL, and hit counters? Back in the day, people didn't expect the net to become as large as it is now. If we could start the internet from scratch today, I think things would be a lot different. This brings me to my first point. TLDs. Read on.

The dawn of the internet (when it went public, I'm not talking about the "original" internet), we had three main top-level domain names, .COM, .ORG, and .NET. .COM was for commercial, miscellaneous, and personal sites. .ORG was for non-profit organizations, and .NET was for internet service providers. The line between each seems to have faded now, though. Alongside these, we also have country TLDs, which are two-letter codes for country-specific sites. I'll get to those later.

Back when the internet was young, three main TLDs wasn't a large problem, but now, it just isn't working. Why? First off, lack of available good names. Who's fault is this? Domain squatters. Why domain squatting is still legal is beyond me, but it's something that needs to be addressed.

Secondly, any site worth half a shit is going to want to "protect" their name and buy the same name in more than one TLD. If people need to do this, then the system is obviously flawed. They are trying to fix this by releasing new TLDs every so often (.name, .info, .aero, and .mobi, for example. More below.), but now it's just inconsistent. Here's what we have (I'm not including ccTLDs yet).

  • .com :: What people consider to be the "main" TLD.
  • .org :: What people consider to be another "main" TLD.
  • .net :: A third "main" TLD.
  • .info :: Intended for informational sites.

Now, here's where the inconsistencies begin:

  • .aero :: Strictly for airlines and related.
  • .pro :: Strictly for professionals (lolwut?).
  • .cat :: For sites in the Catalan language or related to Catalan culture (lolwuuuuut?).
  • .asia :: For Asian companies (Apparently Asia is worthy of a continental TLD, but no other region is)
  • .mil and .gov :: For US military and government sites (Why is US not mentioned in the name?)
  • .tel :: Please don't even get me started.

I'm sure there are more, but my point is proven. WHAT. THE. HELL? Catalan-language sites get their own TLD, and English sites don't? Where's my .eng TLD? Why is the USA special enough to get ".gov" for it's government sites? Why wasn't it given to, say, Australia? Anyone who thinks that the US is the world's "main" country has issues to work out. ICANN, get your heads out of your asses.

I will now go on to ccTLDs (Country-specific names). The biggest problem is still inconsistency. Example time:

  • Canada :: Canadian residents are free to register a .ca domain name to use for anything. They can also register provincial sub-TLDs. For example, if you want to say that you are a British Columbian company, you can get a .bc.ca name. Alberta is .ab.ca, etc. Government uses .gc.ca names.
  • United Kingdom :: Commercial ("main") sites use the .co.uk name. Personal sites use the .me.uk name. I'm sure there are more. Why doesn't Canada have a .co.ca name? Why doesn't the UK just use .uk? Who the hell knows.
  • Australia :: Their domain system is similar to the GTLDs, but the use the full "com" instead of just "co". Inconsistency.
  • USA :: They've got .us. That's it.
  • Montenegro :: They've got .me. Visiting gov.me takes you to their government site. Why doesn't gov.uk take you to the UK's government site? Come to think of it, the Montenegrin government markets their TLD as a generic one that's "all about you!". This is something else that should be illegal. What a pile. This is what .name is for. Do people even use .name anymore?

Why is nothing streamlined? It makes the entire system seem like a joke. There's going to be a day when the entire system just falls apart. Something really needs to be done. Unfortunately, removing and editing TLDs is not an easy process at all. So, at least for now, we're pretty much stuck like this.

If I could make a few changes, here's what I would do:

  • If a domain isn't being used for something practical ("What you need, when you need it"), I should have every right to take it and use it for something nice.
  • Streamline ccTLDs. Disallow "domain hacks" unless the appropriate TLD is still used, they just cause confusion. Is identi.ca only for Canadians? No.
  • Banish .tel.
  • Phase out .com for category-based names.
  • Reserve .net names for ISPs, like it used to be.
  • Anything on .org sites should be noncommercial/nonprofit.

In conclusion, the domain name system COULD be drastically improved, but it would take vast amounts of effort and URL changes, unfortunately, and may never happen.

Feel free to correct any of my mistakes, or disagree with any of my opinions. Debate is good.

Icehuck should be de-adminned from viperchief.com.

Obvious power abuse. All I did was inform people about my recent career as a Viagra salesman, and I get fucking banned for two days. What has this world become?

Getting slightly annoyed with MobileMe

Argh. My MobileMe mail keeps moving around different folders. Sometimes I open my mail client to see that all my sent messages have been moved from the regular Sent folder to a new folder called "Sent (MobileMe)", then it will complain that the Sent folder can't be found. Arghhhhh.

What I want to see in forum software

For a site I'm building for someone, I have jumped around about ten different forum solutions, but I still have yet to find the perfect one. There are some things that annoy me about some, and some things I love about others. But, there are still some things that I really wish would be implemented somewhere.

1) The ability to import board layouts from a text file. Most forum solutions require about 10-15 clicks per board creation. I would much rather just type out my board names, permissions, etc into a text file, then import it. That would make initial board creation a LOT easier, and future edits less of a pain.

2) Themes. The amount of decent themes I can find for any forum system is about 2.5%. Instead of releasing shit, I think theme creators should try for something nice. The only decent phpBB3 theme I can find is the included one. (Not the default, the other one).

3) Each new board should NOT have 000 permissions. Each new board should have permissions that are actually useful. Readable by all, writable by members. Gosh. This is one place where SMF and MyBB shines.

Well, those are my three biggest gripes. What would really be awesome is something totally new. Every board system looks more or less the same. I'm waiting on someone with one great idea, something that would completely rewrite how forums work.

Features Removed From Win7

Windows Seven is quite an OS, lots of fixes and improvements. That said, some stuff was removed. You can read this Wikipedia article for a complete list of removed features, but I will go over what I deem significant. The first thing being the Classic Start Menu. Come on Microsoft, some of us find the redesigned menu to be a tad cumbersome, myself included. Contrary to what Microsoft says, I find the older menu better for finding what I want in as little time as possible. Everything is there right in front of you, instead of being splurged all over the place.

Another thing that will really annoy me is Auto Arrange (and Align to Grid) cannot be disabled. What a FUCKING PILE. Sometimes when I have a whole bunch of files in front of me, I like to shove them in different physical places in the window (easy on a 30" monitor). CSS files in one corner, PHP files in another, etc. This is really gonna suck.

Next up. Windows Calendar, and a game called InkBall are both gone (Fuck! Inkball was awesome!). What is the point of this? Is needlessly removing applications really necessary? Damn.A hell of a lot of other software was also removed (Mail, Movie Maker, etc), but those can be downloaded from MS's site. DreamScene is also MIA.

Not that anyone actually gives a shit about Windows Media Player, but it should probably be noted that jukebox mode is no more. They should just get rid of Windows Media Player entirely, nobody who isn't a massive idiot uses that thing anyway.

Now for minor things that aren't really rant-worthy, but still fucked:

  • Taskbar is always on top and cannot be changed
  • The number of combined taskbar windows is not calculated and shown next to the combined buttons.
  • The Network Setup Wizard and the Wireless Network Setup Wizard are no more.
  • ClearType cannot be turned off
  • Say bye-bye to the Aurora, Windows Energy and Windows Logo screensavers

The improvements in W7 most likely outweigh theses feature removals, but some of them may be dealbreakers for you, so I just wanted to point them all out.
